American Dreams

“Since I was seventeen I thought I might be a star. I’d think about all my heroes, Charlie Parker, Jimi Hendrix… I had a romantic feeling about how these people became famous.”

On My Own

“I am very slow to warm. I’ve always been sort of a loner. I didn’t play team sports. I am better one-on-one than in big groups. I can understand wanting to be invisible and mistrusting people and wanting to understand everything before you engage with the world”

“I disagree with a couple of the stances of the Catholic Church. My older brother is gay and it’s important for me to be able to love him completely and freely and it’s important for me to spread beliefs in the world that are not going to limit people in their love. I can’t support a religion that doesn’t support my brother.”

The Saddest Song

“Throughout my life I’ve just had a harder time with rejection than most people. I think I’m a much more sensitive guy than most men my age…people hearing my songs might think ‘god this guy’s such a drag, he must never be happy, he must be miserable’, and of course I’m always miserable, everyone is if they’re honest. I’m miserable much more of the time so I’d rather sing something I can really sink into onstage. There’s no interest in writing a purely blissful song for me.”

-Jonathan Pierce
